United States Declaration of Independence

July 4th is recognized as the day we declared independence from Great Britain. Just a few notes taken from Wikipedia and from my family history.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” This sentence is not part of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. The declaration is not a legal document but since President Lincoln it has been considered to be one of “our founding documents” and has been canonized into the public sphere as a guiding principle of American law. This is why FDR’s Second Bill of Rights is so very important. The Bill would establish these ideals as law, as a Bill of Rights in companionship with the original Bill of Rights. They would become statutory law not just ideals to aspire towards.

Through the years I have often read through the grievances listed against the monarch to see what applies to our current administrations. This year, 2019, is no different. I know the president wants to have some sort of celebration, this is in keeping with the past as you read through the Wikipedia article but it was mostly just a speech, not a spectacle. I will not be celebrating the 4th of July this year, I am of the opinion it is no longer a recognition of the separation from Great Britain but some sort of obscene nationalistic rally. A nonrecognition of what really happened, it is a false pride.

The members of my family that signed the Declaration of Independence are: Philip Livingston and Lewis Morris.
